"Manic Munchies" a food truck and catering brand by "The Moody Foodie" began this entrepreneurial endeavor. After 15 years working nearly every job in the industry across 100 restaurants, from dishwasher to chef, to multi-unit brand management, Chef Mike was ready to step into new, more challenging roles. In early 2014 with the support of his parents was able to achieve this dream and bring "The Moody Foodie" to New Mexico. Working with schools and parks in Rio Rancho in addition to the typical bars and breweries, Chef Mike was able to better support and provide for his local community.
Upon the sale of his first business, funds were allocated to open the first brick-and-mortar restaurant, "The Point Grill at Mariposa" in 2015. Partnering with a local Mariposian, local investors, and continued family support, The Point Grill built a strong following in its first 3 years until its close date in 2018 on its three year anniversary. Featuring Akaushi beef wagyu burgers, hand-crafted sandwiches, from-scratch pasta dishes, gourmet mac and cheese varieties, and chef-inspired entrees as well as an extensive wine list and local craft beers, 'The Point' was a neighborhood favorite. In an effort to bring positivity and opportunity to the community, Chef Mike began "The Kitchen Kids Inc."; a non-profit dedicated to teaching culinary skills and recipes to all-abilities children by brining them together first hand with professional chefs. With the support of staff, numerous New Mexico Chefs, and local schools, The Kitchen Kids led over 300 students in the first few years. The Point garnered multiple Best of the City awards, and, along with being named 2018 New Mexico Chef of the Year by the New Mexico Restaurant Association, it became time for the next step. At that time Chef Mike moved into a larger, more centralized location in westside Albuquerque, brining "High Point Grill" within reach to citizens of Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Bernalillo, and beyond.
High Point Grill opened its doors just two months after closing the smaller, distant flagship location in Mariposa. Continuing the focus on fresh, quality, from-scratch cooking the transition was seamless. Chef Mike and the team carried on philanthropic efforts working with dozens of local New Mexico charities each year in numerous capacities. From donations, to competitions, to 'boots-on-the-ground' hands-on volunteering, community involvement became and remains among the highest priorities for Chef Mike and High Point. It is during this time that Chef Mike took the reigns as Director of 505 Food Fights, a non-profit that hosts culinary competitions for the public to attend, enjoy, and most importantly, raise money for local charities. In 2019, High Point Grill, The Kitchen Kids Inc, and 505 Food Fights raised over $25,000 for other local non-profits like The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Sophia's Foundation for Autism, Rebels with a Cause, and dozens of others, and was subsequently honored with Edible New Mexico's Local Hero Award for Non-Profits.
Maintaining an honest and rustic approach to quality ingredients, a portion of the menu was branched off and brought to Albuquerque's Northeast Heights. "Rustico by High Point" opened early in 2021 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic that saw the closure of over 400 New Mexico restaurants. Featuring specifically an extended menu of handmade pastas, stone-fired gourmet pizzas, and upscale entrees, Rustico settled in nicely boasting a full-bar and craft cocktails. While making hundreds of pounds of pasta by hand weekly did not decline, the request to access High Point's original menu never ceased nor slowed either. It was evident, the citizens on the east side of the river wanted a taste of what the west side has been enjoying for over 6 years; and seemingly in synchrony, the west side said, "Where's my pizza?!" Alas...the writing was on the wall. Both locations would remarry and share the same fulfilling menu offerings on opposite sides of town. "High Point Rustic Kitchen" is now here for the west, east, north, and south. It took over 15,000 Southwest Burgers sold and dozens of awards to show the obvious path; High Point Rustic Kitchen!
